Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun - The True Life Story of Dagrin
Dagrin was also known as Barack O'Grin, Lyrical Werre. His usual ajasa was "Fi mi le Jo", which means leave me alone in English.
Da Grin was a famous indigenous rap artiste. Born on 25 October 1987 in Ogun state. Meanwhile, His prolific rap lyrics in Yoruba language won the hearts of everyone as he carved a niche for himself inspite of the presence of pioneer mother-tongue rappers like ‘Lord of Ajasa’.
Dagrin’s father was notable among musicians having being in the entertainment industry for almost three decades. Although it was his late son that further dragged the family name to limelight, Comrade Olaniyi has subtly worked with different prominent Fuji and juju musicians through his music platform, Miosofunyin Entertainment.
Da grin himself started his music career in 1994 in his local church as a drummer, before going into rap.
He completed both his primary and secondary school education and obtained both his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate in Ogun State.
After completing his early education, Dagrin relocated to Lagos to pursue his music career as a rapper.
While he was in Lagos, he lived at Meiran, Alagbado, Lagos State,
He released his first studio album Still On The Matter, but the album flopped due to not having enough promotion. In 2009 He released his second studio album called C.E.O. (Chief Executive Omoita). In 2010 he was nominated for the Nigerian Entertainment Awards for Best Album (C.E.O.), Hottest Single "Pon Pon Pon", Best Rap Act and Best Collaboration with vocals. His album C.E.O. (Chief executive Omota English: Chief Executive Thug) won the Hip hop World Award 2010 for best rap album. From it came the singles "Pon Pon Pon", and "Kondo". Dagrin worked with other Nigerian artists such as Y.Q, 9ice, M.I, Iceberg Slim, Omobaba, Terry G, Ms Chief, Owen G, K01, code, MISTAR DOLLAR, TMD entertainment, Omawumi, Chudy K, Bigiano, and Konga. His third studio If I Die was released posthumously
Dagrin’s album, CEO, was the most successful rap album of 2009, and one of the most successful hip hop CDS since Ruggedman ‘Thy Album Come’ and MI’s ‘Let’s Talk About It.’
One of the song he sang from the album about two months before his death. "If I Die" was as if he knew he was going to actually die after the release of that album
On April 14, 2010, DaGrin's Nissan Maxima which was just two weeks old at the time rammed into a stationary truck at night. Some reports claim DaGrin was drunk, but those reports remain unproven. Some people alleged that the police illegally stopped a truck at the middle of the road, this report was also unproven. He went into a coma as a result of the collision.There were conflicting reports about his injuries. Some said he was okay and recovering. Others said he was in a pretty bad shape and his life was in the balance.
He survived a serious head injury as a result of the crash. He was initially admitted at Tai Solarin Hospital, Mushin before being transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH) Idi Araba, where doctors made serious efforts to save his life.
The late rapper was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit and operated upon, and later moved to the private wing of the hospital. Eight days of nationwide panic.
Dagrin died at 6:00pm on Thursday, April 22, 2010, exactly eight days after he was involved in the ghastly motor accident in front of Alakara Police Station, off Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos.
He was 25 years old when he died
His father’s speech at his candle Light ceremony was the rap he did to the song he was featured in by YQ, titled: ‘Efimile’
Dagrin's younger brother, Olatunbosun, aka Trod, has appeared on the scene and he says he is here to continue what his elder brother couldn't finish. Trod sounds so much like Dagrin and their flows are so similar, it is not hard to decipher that there's a blood connection between them.
